I counted 7 nests in this oak tree!
When we were here another year we saw lots of Black-Chinned Sparrows. |
Day 4: Monday, February 1
Buckhorn Campground, Black Buttte Lake, Orland, CA
A short drive from Redding brought us to the
campground, where we were the only campers, with a campsite looking south over
the lake. We went on a 6 mile hike
on trails near the campground. We saw deer a couple of time, two
jackrabbits bounding away with long ears in the air, and some curious cows that
came forward to check us out. I collected a few interesting rocks for my
grandson, Rylee. Jim flew his copters down by the lake, nobody to tell us
drones were not allowed! My brother Craig stopped by on his way home to Cupertino and had dinner with
us, got to listen to the many mockingbirds that are in the campground.

Stony Gorge Reservoir |
A herd of Wild Turkeys |
Tuesday morning we went on a drive up to see Stony Gorge Lake, through the countryside. It is a pretty area, remote. There is no Stony Gorge left to see - apparently it was covered up when they dammed the creek to make the lake! We saw wild turkeys along the road on the way back.
