Lake Pleasant Regional Park March 20-21

Days 52, 53   Sunday, Monday   March 20, 21   Lake Pleasant Regional Park   Phoenix, AZ

We walked around Cave Creek park a bit in the morning, tidied up, then headed over to Lake Pleasant, with a campsite Jim had found high on the hill, with a view of the lake in one direction and a view of mountains and the outskirts of Phoenix in the other, with a flock of white-crowned sparrows near the campsite!

We drove to Sun City West to visit Linda’s friends Nancy and Wally Yee, who have an elegant home there.  Nancy provided snacks, and then we went out to dinner at Pei Wei, had great food.  We had not eaten out for a couple of weeks, and although I like to cook, it was fun not to worry about planning, cooking, and cleaning!

Monday we kayaked at Lake Pleasant, launching as far north as we could, and paddled up the northwest arm of the lake.  Clear water, a blue, sunny sky arching like a bowl over our heads.  As we paddled up into the waterway, we saw and heard some of the 900 burros the ranger had told us were in this park.  We also saw and heard a dog barking at the burros and chasing them, heard their alarmed braying.  Unleashed dogs are not allowed in this park.  We saw a guy camping up there, and we later reported this to a ranger.

Peaceful water

Upper end of the lake, plenty of water!

In the afternoon we drove down to Happy Trails in Surprise, where Linda’s friends Rosalie and Al Swanson have a wonderful cottage right on a pond (nice to see those Canadian Geese that are always around at home) and the golf course.  We visited for a while, got to see the Great Horned Owls that are nesting in a tree right next to them, then all went to visit Jim’s neighbors and friends,   Cathy and Bob Shawley, at their RV lot.  After a bit of driving around when our original restaurant choice was closed, we met for dinner at Carabbas, which turned out to be a great Italian meal, many courses, delicious food!  Even Calamari appetizers and rich chocolate gelato dessert!

Before leaving Lake Pleasant Monday morning we went for a walk around the campground loop.  Another sunny day in Arizona!
