Day 5, 6: Tuesday,
Wednesday, February 2, 3 Lake Minden RV Park, Nicolaus, CA
Migrating snow geese, seen as we drove south |
We had stayed at this RPI park before, out in the middle of the fields north of
Sacramento, and with its own lake. After settling into our spot we went
for a walk out through the fields, saw many birds, lots of birdsong around us,
including House Finches, Red-wing Blackbirds warbling their spring territorial
songs, Goldfinches, Yellow-Rumped warblers, and lots of Canada geese, flying
and on the ground.
Lake Minden, on a walk around the lake |
Wednesday we drove 5 miles north to visit
Bobelaine Audubon Sanctuary. This is a rare remnant of the riparian
forests that once projected two to five miles on either side of the rivers in
the Great Central Valley in California, and the property was donated by Bob and
Elaine Crandall in 1975. How great they used their first names to name
it! We walked about 4 1/2 miles on the trails there, saw Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, California and Spotted Towhees, Vultures, a Red-Winged Hawk and a
Swainson's Hawk, Flickers, Goldfinches Black Phoebes. It is all along the
Feather River. We saw many deer and other animal tracks on the trails,
and quite a variety of scat and game trails that told us many creatures live
there.
Can you see the Golden-Crowned Sparrow? |
Vultures, perched in a tree along the Feather River. Keep moving and stay warm, and they will not come after you! |
Wednesday evening we met my lovely
niece Wendy and her charming husband Erik at The Monk's Cellar, a great pub in
Roseville. They treated us to a delicious meal, and we really enjoyed visiting
with them.
Thursday morning we watched a helicopter delivering four men to the top of a power pole to work on it!
